Pixie on Sunday

Hi peoples! I'm just hanging out here by The Mommy's computer chair minding my own business, and of course she had to go and get out the flashy box thing. *sigh* At least I got to show my displeasure about that! Ha!

Hope you kitties are having an easy Sunday...

Shadow lives with three other cats: TT, Molly, and Fatty. They all blog at The Midadventures of Me. He is the only mancat in the group and strangely enough is also the calmest of the cats.

He nearly died when he was a tiny kitten in 2003. Some very mean people dropped off Molly and Shadow and their momcat and left them to take care of themselves. When their Humans found them, Shadow was so cold and hungry that he couldn't even lift his head. He was taken home and wrapped in a warm blanket and fed with sugar water until he could regain his strength. When his Human Mom couldn't look after Shadow, the Boy took care of him. Shadow has been devoted to The Boy ever since.

He loves catnip, but he will only accept it if it is on a plate or in a bowl. If it is just on the floor, he will ignore it. Shadow also loves to play with toy mousies and feather toys.

Shadow is polydactyl, having three extra toes on each of his front paws. Despite rumors to the contrary, not all Polydactals are related to Ernest Hemmingway's cats. Polydactalism is a naturally occurring defect due to close inbreeding amongst cats - most likely ship cats. Once it occurrs in a bloodline however, it does breed true.

Quivering Tail

Have you ever wondered what it means when your cat stands erect with her tail Shaking? In general, your cat is telling you that she is excited. Specifically, if she is interacting with you, she's letting you know that she is a happy cat.

Chemical Message

Have you ever wondered why your cat, after you have greeted her, immediately starts licking herself vigorously? When you petted her, you placed your scent on her hair. By bathing herself she is detecting and interpreting your smell.

Did you know? Americans spend more annually on cat food than on baby food.

Did you know?

Cat have only about 473 taste buds compared to the more than 9,000 taste buds people possess. (We can't for example taste "sweet" at all.)

Cats use the barbs on the back of their tongues to scoop up water when drinking.

The normal body temperature of an adult cat is 102 degrees Fahrenheit.

The oil in catnip leaves contains a chemical called nepetalactone. It is this chemical that causes a reaction in us when sniffed.

Eating non-edible materials is called pica, a condition that affects 2.5 percent of domestic cats. (And I think about 100% of domestic dogs, who are obviously descended from goats.)

An adult cat has 30 permanent teeth, including 12 incisors, 10 premolars, 4 canines and 4 molars.

Facts about Fostering

Could you be a foster parent to a cat? Though animal shelters house thousands of cats, there are still staggering numbers of strays that these facilities simply cannot accommodate without the help o£ foster homes. Foster families open their hearts and homes to cats in need, enabling these organizations to help more cats. Although finding enough dedicated foster homes is a daunting task, fostering saves countless needy cats.

Despite aggressive spay and neuter programs, the number of cats entering shelters has increased – perhaps as much as 20 percent since 1996. More cats mean that shelters are often cramped for space. Foster homes often take care of cats that aren't ready for adoption. This creates space in the shelter, which allows the facility to help those cats that are ready to go to their forever homes. Itty Bitty Kitty Committee is a good example of this kind of fostering, as they take care of kittens until they are old enough to be spayed or neutered and then help to place them in new homes. Besides adorable pictures, they place profiles of each of the kittens on their blog.

Fostering is a better solution and a much more humane option for cats that don't do well in cages or that have been in a rescue organization for a long time. Cats that live in a foster situation stand a better chance of being matched with the right home, since the foster parents often participate in the adoption by communicating with prospective owners and following up after adoption, making transitions smoother and increasing the chance that the cat won't be returned to the adoption agency.

My Bean and her family fostered woofies back when she lived in O Hi O, and Not the Mama - he of our own House Panthers - recently helped out by fostering Callie.

Nicky is one of the cats I've been trying to track down. His link on House Panthers says KellyCat, but it leads nowhere. That would make sense, as they blog off blogger (but couldn't you at least fill out the profile a bit and add a link to the "My Website" section?)

Nicky turned 7-years-old last October. He was adopted as a kitten and has lived with his family since. Upon moving in, he immediately tried to take over the household, but Kelly still refuses to bow down to him.

He is very protective of his family who writes that "People may associate with dogs the words 'loyal,' 'faithful,' and 'brave,' but these qualities also apply to our little black cat. He also plays fetch, he growls when the doorbell rings, and sometimes he even howls in the middle of the night for no apparent reason."

My Bean's mom says that cats are much more loyal, brave and faithful than dogs, but that they always get mislabeled as sneaky, cruel and aloof by people who do not understand us. Perhaps we need to hire better public relations people?

Sometimes called “El Gatito Perfecto”, this good cat blogs at It's all Good. He also does Midnight Monday on a regular basis, even if he never posts links for us.

Time After Time: Essentials for the proper care of an aging cat

(Part 3 of 3)

Oops, an Accident

Cleaning up messes throughout the house can be aggravating for your human staff, but it is not surprising for aging cats to urinate or defecate outside the litterbox. Older cats are more at risk for kidney and/or liver failure, diabetes and even osteoarthritis; all of which contribute to litterbox-related behavior problems. Your caretaker should spend extra time ensuring that your litterbox is clean, and placed in a private area. If the problems continues, pay your veterinarian a visit to put your mind at ease and ensure there are no health issues.

Mega Personality

Personalities might change in old age, but for cats, sometimes the opposite is more accurate.

"What I have noticed is that whatever personality a cat has becomes more exaggerated as they age," says Kelly K. Jones, a veterinarian at the Cat Hospital of Wichita in Wichita, Kansas. "For instance, a lap cat will become more of a lap cat. An aggressive cat, on the other hand, will certainly not become more friendly as he ages, but I have not seen personality changes unless it is associated with something like a brain tumor or other brain condition."

"An informed and alert caretaker is a cat's best friend," says Stephanie F. Westerman, an associate veterinarian at Summer Street Cat Clinic in Buffalo, N.Y. "With an attentive caretaker, regular veterinary care and a dose of luck, cats can live good-quality lives to late in the teens, and even beyond!"

You now know exactly how to keep thriving through the rest of your life. Schedule: an appointment with your veterinarian: assure that cozy spots are set up for you to curl up in, and get ready make the most of your golden years.

7 Simple Ways to Help Cats in Need

1 to 3 were part of yesterday's post, here at House Panthers. Today we conclude the article.

4. Foster and find a home.

Fostering can be a rewarding and fulfilling experience for both you and the rescued cat. (Just ask Not the Mama how rewarding it was to foster Calli!)

"It's important to have a setup where rescued kitties will be isolated from other cats in your household for a while," says Nancy Peterson, Feral Cat Program Manager with The Humane Society of the United States in Washington, D.C "Be sure to socialize the cats and kittens and get them used to having their nails clipped, being held and having their ears checked."

When they're ready for adoption, create fliers and newspaper ads with irresistable photos and descriptions of the cats, and spread the word to friends, family and co-workers.

5. Spay and neuter.

All rescued cats should be spayed or neutered to prevent future generations of homeless cats from being born, but it's a little more of a challenge when the cat isn't tame.

"Let's say that you find a feral cat," Castle says. "You won't be able to touch it or bring it inside, but it still needs to be fIXed. The trap-neuter-return (TNR) technique should be used to capture the cat in a humane trap, get it fixed, return it to its environment and provide it with ongoing food and water."

A complete guide to TNR can be found at www.alleycat.org. Also, www.spayusa.org lists free spay and neuter options.

"The thing that people don't realize is that cats can get pregnant at just 4 to 5 months of age and also can become pregnant while nursing a litter of kittens," Peterson says.

6. Adopt the cat yourself.

"If you find a stray cat, if you're willing and able to keep it, that's a lovely option," Peterson says. It's also a popular option: 33 percent of people obtain their cats and kittens as strays, according to the American Pet Products Manufacturers Association 2007-2008 National Pet Owners Survey.

"It's common for people to find cats that show up on their doorsteps, and then when they help, it's a wonderful thing to do for the animal and the person," Castle says. "They often find it's the best cat they've ever had."

7. Help stop the cycle of animal homelessness.

Unless you want to find lots more cats on your doorstep, educate your neighbors, friends and family about the importance of spaying and neutering their pets.

Last but not least, give yourself a pat on the back for helping a cat in need!

Purring: Much about purring remains a mystery to veterinary professionals. There are many theories about how we produce the sound and why large felines (lions, tigers, etc.), with the exception of the cheetah, can't produce it.

Many of those theories focus on the vibration of the vestibular folds located in your throat. Although it's true purpose isn't know either, feline professionals almost universally agree that purring is a form of communication. The most common misconception is that purring only communicates happy, content feelings.

We actually purr for a number of reason, which are in some way or another connected to things we experience as kittens. Because kittens are born blind and deaf, the rumbling of the mother's purr is one of the only things they can still recognize. A mother cat purrs to let her kittens know that they are warm and safe. Purring as adults is thought to be connected with these early experiences.

We do purr as adults to convey happy, content feelings, as we did when we were kittens. Other reason however may be to convey submission or friendliness. (I sometimes sit next to my human and purr in the hope that she will give me treats.) When sick or injured, we usually purr for those reasons; we want others to know that we are receptive to help.

We also purr when we are afraid or anxious, it is a way in which we comfort ourselves in those situations. On some occasions, we will purr when we are dying, it is also a way to comfort ourselves and as an act of acceptance of our natural end.

Note: Churchill's Mombean had asked about bathing him, so starting on Monday, we will begin a four-or-five part series on the correct way to take a B-A-T-H when it involves the wet water stuff.

The Long and the Short of it: Feline experts agree that whisker length and shapes vary per breed. Domestically, Himalayans and Persians grow curled down whiskers, while Maine Coons sprout extra long tuffs. Though size has nothing to do with vision, on the wild side, Bengal Tigers claim the most ample and handsome mustachios while sight-driven Cheetahs sport the shortest whiskers. Michael Tewes, Ph.D., professor and coordinator at Texas A&M's Feline Research Program of the Caesar Kleberg Wildlife Research Institute says diurnal (active by day) creatures such as a Cheetahs depend on vision, "whereas most wild cats are primarily nocturnal and thus rely mostly on (the) tactile."

So, what of the old adage that a cat's whiskers are as long as their bodies are wide? Veterinarian Tracy McFarland notes that many of the cats she sees nowadays are chunky and she suggests whiskers actually are as wide as a cat's body should be.
