Whisker Wednesday

black cat,photoshop
Mickey is a geezer cat that lives up in Canada and blogs at Mickey the Black Cat. He likes nothing better than to sit in the sun and dream of his Miss Peach. Here he shows off his whiskers. I've applied the poster edge filter to accent his "mustache".

Size Matters! Bowl size, that is. Every wonder why some of us paw our food from our dish and eat from the floor? We're not trying to be polite. Long whiskers brushing up against a short-rimmed bowl causes some discomfort, leading to the problem.

Paul Maza, veterinarian and feline consultant at the Cornell Feline Health Centers says "It's a plausible hypothesis that cats might take food out of the bowl to avoid sensory information they don't need at that time, but some cats just like to take food and put it on the floor."

The feeding bowl should be big enough so kitty whiskers don't rub the sides, says Moon-Fanelli, explaining that "whiskers are sensitive to air currents and pick up vibrations to determine the size and shape of thing in their environment with seeing or touching."

Moon-Fanelli calls cat whiskers a natural ruler for judging spaces.

(Just a note: I used to have one white whisker on the left side of my face. Then a matching one grew in on the right side. Bean was looking at me today and notice the white whisker on the left has now falled out, and I'm down to one white whisker again, this time on the right side of my face.)

More on Whiskers as Whisker Week continues tomorrow, here on House Panthers!

Help Higgins! Higgins, a beautiful 3 year old long haired House Panther is looking for a furrever home in the Los Angeles, California, area. I must say, he is a very handsome Mancat and I'm told he's very lovable as well.

Higgins has been features on Kat's Cat of the Day as well as Grr, Midnight & Cocoa's Blog.

If you can let Higgins into your heart and your homes, please contact Midnight's Mom for more information.

Good Mews! House Panthers will be hosting the Carnival of the Cats #215, the weekend of April 27, 2008. This will be the first time that I, Diamond Emerald-Eyes, have hosted a Carnival of the Cats and also the first time it will be hosted at House Panthers. I'm really looking forward to this event, and I hope you will join us to make a huge success!

Not so good Mews: Pepper, the Russian Blue house panther I wrote about last week lost her battle.

Pepper’s mom took her home from the vet and within hours Pepper had a seizure and died. For further information please go to Pepper’s page.

Give Jan (Pepper’s mom) time to come to grips with this loss. There is an email address if you want to send a message.

And there is still a huge vet bill due, if you could help them with a contribution.
