Paczki are basically jelly donuts. Pronounced "poon-shki" they are a Polish pastry that appear in bakeries in the days before Fat Tuesday (Mardi Gras). They are a treat before lent.
Traditionally, they were made with lard in the batter so they were heavier and richer than other donuts. For people NOT observing Lent, the best time to get them is on Ash Wednesday, when they are sold as Day Old on clearance! :)
