Happy-Go-Lucky is one of several House Panther members at Petronious the Arbiter. Hockey Puck and Petey himself are members as well, as I think is one of the females. I can't find much on the girls on the site.

In any case, Lucky or HGL as he is sometimes called, is tailless - which I guess would make him a House Bobcat.

While Petey has been blogging since November of 2005, it's been mainly on and off, more off than on. He was fairly active on House Panthers, but has been quiet of late, and he acts as the voice for Lucky who he claims his is "personal assistant who handles all his dirty work, like grooming and pouncing."

Lucky was the baby of the family until Hockey Puck showed up. He claims he likes napping with his mom, chasing his sisfurs and playing with the red dot. He's learned to open the cabinet doors in the kitchen, and eat the woofie food - the felines also share their home with a number of woofies.

He's 15 lbs, and much like me, he loves belly rubs!

Fostering: Do you have what it takes?

Fostering is a tough job and it isn’t for everyone. A cat you foster may be with you for the rest of its life (like Mosaic Annie), so it can be a big commitment. You may be responsible for veterinary bills and other expenses. Fostering orphaned kittens may require feeding the litter every two hours every two hours - a hug demand of time. Feral cats and kittens require a place where they can be contained until they acclimate to humans. Because feral cats often bite, their foster parents may need rabies vaccinations and not be too thin skinned about a little nip here and there. Abused cats take months to trust humans, and injured cats require frequent medications.

And letting go is hard as well, because you get attached. Some foster parents cry each time one of their kittens finds an adopter. But if you adopt every kitten, eventually you wouldn’t have the space to foster. Sometimes it takes a while for the fostered felines to settle in. There can be a lot of hissing, whapping and defensive posturing each time a new foster comes into a household.

Consider how your foster must feel to have lost his or her home and be in a strange place. They need time to settle in and they are not trying to muscle in out your territories, despite what you might thing. Always keep in touch with the rescue group your are working with about any problems. If the foster cat hurts the current residents or gets hurt, the group may opt to try a different foster home.

If you are interested in fostering, call your local shelter and ask about fostering programs. If your shelter doesn't use foster homes, ask your veterinarian if he or she knows of any rescue groups, or look on Pets911.com or Petfinder.com. Once you find a group near you, make sure it's a group with which you want to work.

Becoming a feline foster parent is a big commitment but it is a rewarding way to help make a difference in the pet overpopulation crisis.

Midnight, Cocoa and Grrr were all feral kittens found living under a junk car in 2005.

Midnight gets a lovely red ruff around her neck in the winter, that sheds out in the summer. She has close bonds to both of her siblings, all of which share a blog at Grr, Midnight and Cocoa.

Midnight was previously featured on House Panthers on Monday, March 3rd.

Facts about Fostering

Could you be a foster parent to a cat? Though animal shelters house thousands of cats, there are still staggering numbers of strays that these facilities simply cannot accommodate without the help o£ foster homes. Foster families open their hearts and homes to cats in need, enabling these organizations to help more cats. Although finding enough dedicated foster homes is a daunting task, fostering saves countless needy cats.

Despite aggressive spay and neuter programs, the number of cats entering shelters has increased – perhaps as much as 20 percent since 1996. More cats mean that shelters are often cramped for space. Foster homes often take care of cats that aren't ready for adoption. This creates space in the shelter, which allows the facility to help those cats that are ready to go to their forever homes. Itty Bitty Kitty Committee is a good example of this kind of fostering, as they take care of kittens until they are old enough to be spayed or neutered and then help to place them in new homes. Besides adorable pictures, they place profiles of each of the kittens on their blog.

Fostering is a better solution and a much more humane option for cats that don't do well in cages or that have been in a rescue organization for a long time. Cats that live in a foster situation stand a better chance of being matched with the right home, since the foster parents often participate in the adoption by communicating with prospective owners and following up after adoption, making transitions smoother and increasing the chance that the cat won't be returned to the adoption agency.

My Bean and her family fostered woofies back when she lived in O Hi O, and Not the Mama - he of our own House Panthers - recently helped out by fostering Callie.

Smudge was the founder of House Panthers. He was diagnosed with CRF in November of 2006. At the time it was believed that he had six months to a year to live, but he has since made it past that and seems to be doing well with the one remaining kidney he has.

Originally he lived with Magoo, Bella and Dolce and blogged at And then there were four...eh? However, after he became sick, he began to associate his human Dad with the Vet visits, and decided that house was not his home anymore. He moved in with his Grandmaw and now lives with his new sisfur Chloe where he is more comfortable.

We don't hear much from Smudge these days since his Gramdmaw is not a blogging type human, but he seems happy and was last reported (Nov. of 2007) as doing well there.

Thank YOU Smudge, for starting this wonderful group for all House Panthers!

A Pair Affair

When our furriends Riley and Rascal were adopted into the Grr family, it was because they were found together, abandoned. Indeed, Grr herself, was found with her siblings Midnight and Cocoa and the family was kept in tact. This may have been a matter of sentiment on the part of the Lady and the Formerly Blond Girl, but it now seems that it was the correct thing to do.

Adopting a new kitten can be a fun and exciting time for most families. However allowing a cat into ones life is a larger commitment than many humans believe. Many shelters are implementing an adoption-in-pair policy as a new requirement. I have seen this on Itty Bitty Kitty Committee blog as well, as they wish the kittens to go to their new homes in pairs.

Cats are social creatures and the majority enjoy companionship and live longer, happier lives with a buddy. One of the most common reasons kittens are returned to an adoption group is because they are left alone all day. They can become biters out of frustration and can develop anti-social behavior towards people and other animals.

Kittens will become most active once they are 7-8 weeks old. They are high energy and require at least 4 hours of interaction per day with another kitten or cat to become a well socialized animal. Playing together is a complex learning activity that can assist with building the coordination and flexability. It can also help them develop social relationships and helps them hone their physical and mental skills. Play provides an outlet for pent up energy and can prevent potential behavior problems, eliminating boredom. When two kittens, ideally littermates, are adopted together, they keep each other company while their human companions are not at home. They will interacting with each other and mimicking the other's actions. If one kitten is quick to learn appropriate behavior, the other will be likely to follow.

Engaging in play is not only fun, but an instinct that contributes to their natural maturity and growth. Two kittens learning together helps create a better transition for them to grow into a well behaved adult cat. Those who are raised together have the chance to be lifelong friends and of course two lives would be saved, instead of just one.

Mosaic Annie demonstrates one of the things you have to be careful about when fostering kittens. This House Panther, who will turn 2 in August, started out as a foster and later became a permanent fixture, much to the chagrin of the geriatric residents who where at her new home first.

You can find Annie on theMosaic Cats blog, where she is currently fighting a War on Tomerism.

I know, I know, Annie was a featured House Panther not too long ago on February 22nd, but we had this piece made up for a while and I am running late today (which is also why there is no article).

Emily is a 2 year old Domestic Shorthaired who lives the rest of The Cats Stephens in Richmond, Virginia. She was a rescue and a pound cat.

She loves playing with her Whirley Bird, or playing Thundering Herd of Elephants with Eliot and Abbie. She likes being up high, preferring to rest at the top of the cat tree or on the upper level of the Cat condo. She does not like being picked up (and I do not much blame her there).

As I mentioned before, while Abbie is the actual House Panther of the group, Emily makes a lovely edition to our Blue Wednesday clan.

FELINE ORTHOPEDIC TROUBLES

Michael J. Slawienski, a veterinarian at Akron Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center in Akron, Ohio, says he sees broken legs frequently in the emergency clinic. Many are indoor/outdoor cats that were hit by cars or fell from trees and buildings; however, indoor cats are not immune to breaks. Symptoms include limping or hesitance to put weight on the leg, swelling, uneven shoulders or pelvis, hearing bone grinding on bone or seeing the bone protruding from a wound.

Slawienski advises placing the cat in a carrier or box with easy access so it doesn't have to move getting in or out of the box: Try to keep the cat quiet and get it to the veterinarian immediately to avoid further damage to bones or organs (from bones protruding into them).

During the exam, the veterinarian will watch the cat walk, feel the area around the break and X-ray it. Some breaks can be treated with a splint. In severe breaks, surgery might be necessary. Surgery might be delayed for several days to decrease swelling and to ensure that the cat is stable enough for anesthesia.

Though extremely serious, pelvic fractures might be treated with strict immobilization, such as confining it to a cage for several weeks. The high number of nerves and blood vessels in this area makes surgery more difficult. Most fractures heal well with proper care, but open fractures are prone to infection, which makes recovery more difficult.

X-rays usually are done every 4 to 6 weeks to monitor the break's progress. The veterinarian will provide instructions for care. They usually include a balance of rest and physical therapy, most of which can be done at home. Close adherence to these instructions will increase the cat's chance of complete recovery.

TAIL TRAUMA

While painful, most tail breaks aren't serious, unless they occur very close to the hind quarters. According to Alan 1- Schulman, owner of Animal Medical Center of Los Angeles in West Los Angeles, this is because the nerves at this level control bowel and bladder functions, and tail movement. The cat might be incontinent or unable to urinate on its own. In the latter case, a veterinarian might need to manually express urine from the cat.

Schulman also says that amputation might be necessary, but there never should be a rush to do this. Try non-surgical treatment for at least 30 days before having surgery attempted. Nerves sometimes can regenerate, and the cat may regain some function. In very severe cases, "the cat eventually might have to be put to sleep because its quality of life is so severely impacted.

From the PetsitUSA.com Blog:

4-H kids raise money for pet oxygen masks

Children in the Paws 4 A Cause Dog 4-H Club recently helped an injured dog, even though they weren't present when the dog was hurt.

The Monmouth County club donated pet oxygen masks last year to emergency medical services squads3 and several fire departments in the county. In early January, when a small gray-and-white dog became trapped beneath a small sedan on Prospect Avenue in Little Silver, one of masks helped, says Peter Giblin, a lieutenant with the Little Silver EMS squad.

"The dog got wedged under the car. Our fire department and EMS responded. They lifted up the car and pulled the dog out. We administered oxygen with the mask, which calmed the dog right down. It worked out great," Giblin says. The dog was treated by a veterinarian and is fine, he says.

"We had a dog die in a fire two years ago. These masks might be able to help a dog with smoke inhalation," adds Giblin, a dog lover and borough firefighter. "It's an outstanding program. I'm very impressed with the kids."

The club — with 29 youths ages 6 through 18, about half boys, half girls — started the project last June, says club co-leader Esther Murphy, 47, of Spring Lake Heights. Her daughter Monica, 13, is club president. Joanne Risa of Tinton Falls is the other co-leader.

Black Tabby Tuesday

Riley's Room
Click the image to Bigify it. Image Info.

Riley is Rascal's sister, the two kittens were adopted together after they were found abandoned in a park at the end of August, apparently on the day they were born. That makes them the youngest in the five feline crew at Grr, Midnight and Cocoa. Rascal is the only non-House Panther in the group, the token tabby.

She likes to sleep on the heads of people who are sleeping, she also likes to bite on something when she's sleeping...a finger, a bit of blanket...

Grr tries to eat her and stalks her like prey, but she will scream as loudly as possible when Grr attacks her. She sounds exactly like an angry panther, and not like a frightened kitten.

Aside from her Panther roar, she has a very fierce growl and is even more grrrr-ier then Grr, more biteyer than Cocoa and more maddening then Midnight.

Soothing the Savage Beast

(Article by Caroline Goldman
Part 2 of 2)

MUSICAL STYLES

Not everyone agrees on whether music calms cats, but everyone seems to agree on the type of music to do the job; soft classical tunes, instrumental, muzak and elevator music - anything with a steady, calm rhythm.

"Humans relax with calm music, so most classical pieces, elevator music and similar bland types would be best," Beaver says. "I would avoid loud, highly active pieces." Beaver refers to one study that showed how cats relaxed to classical music but not to jazz. Other types of music had no affect. Another study showed that anything. calm and steady works well, and rock music actively disturbs cats. Rhythm might play a key role in calming nervous cats.

"We do know from established research that music that mimics natural body rhythms has clear effects on behaviors in humans," says Mary Lee Nitschke, an animal behaviorist at Animal School Behavior Services in Portland, Oregon. “For example, baroque music is close to the human heartbeat frequency. I don't know why it would be different for felines, and I would bet their preferences would show some relationship to patterns that entrain, mimic or are in synchrony with their basic biological rhythms."

Biological rhythms, such as heartbeats, often are incorporated into music to calm fussy babies. Terry Woodford, the maker of Baby-Go-To-Sleep Heartbeat Music Therapy CDs, began selling heartbeat music created specifically for pets after customers reported that his music calmed the cat, too.

Many others are making music just for pets. Pet Melodies mixes classical Mozart and Beethoven with biorhythms and natural sounds such as ocean waves. Janet Marlow strums her guitar in her pet-relaxation series. Pets Love Music makes "Cat Dreams" (volumes 1 and 2) while Aristocratic Pet created "Music to Calm Your Pets." Along with product descriptions and purchasing opportunities, of course, come the customer reviews - personal tales of how normally fussy Bootsy or Tiger settled into a serene silence upon hearing the music.

WHATEVER WORKS

For Thomas, the proof that music calms cats came in Sweetface's tranquil acceptance of his regular fluid injections. Even his veterinarian admitted how rare it was for a cat to live so long on daily injections.

"Sweetface's quality of life remained excellent, playful and loving, right up until the end," Thomas says. "So, yes, I believe music may affect animals - just as it does us."

While Sweetface's doctor didn't advocate the use of music, he urged Thomas to continue whatever put the cat and herself at ease during the injections. As Beaver says, "Calm music certainly can't hurt, and if it helps, so much the better."

Soothing the Savage Beast

(Article by Caroline Goldman
Part 1 of 2)

For nearly five years, Elaine Thomas' cat Sweetface endured regular fluid injections because of kidney disease. "At first, he feared them, growing agitated and struggling," Thomas says. "It was extremely difficult." Then one day, Thomas put on an Enya CD, "more to calm myself than him," she says. "I know it sounds absolutely crazy but it worked. It became a ritual: Sweetface would fall into a trance-like state for the few minutes the injection took each day."

Anecdotal evidence of how cats react to music is overwhelming. Stories abound about cats rolling around purring in front of speakers during particular.songs, howling when humans play instruments and even racing to sit in front of the television during Gilbert and Sullivan performances. My cats regularly curl into meditative states when a soft tune hums through the house.

For many owners, the idea that tranquil music might calm their cats comes as no surprise. After all, if music helps calm and heal the human soul, why wouldn't it do the same for our wild-eyed pets? Science has offered very little proof about music's affect on cats, and many veterinarians and animal behaviorists don't buy it.

CALMING POWERS

Many people appreciate a relaxing dose of music before bedtime, but science is only beginning to understand why. Civilizations as far back as the Ancient Greeks understood the connection between music and health when they named Apollo the god of both music and medicine. Several recent scientific studies of humans revealed that soothing music helps decrease the stress hormone cortisol while increasing the calming hormone melatonin.

Music also has been shown to lower blood pressure, increase pain-numbing endorphins and improve the body's immune system. Surgery patients exposed to music during recovery experience less pain, while people suffering from chronic pain report that listening to music regularly reduces both pain and depression.

FELINE SCIENCE

With cats, however, little scientific proof exists to support the anecdotal tales. Many veterinarians maintain that music has not been clinically shown to affect cats.

"For most cats, music has little to no affect," says Bonnie Beaver, executive director of the American College of Veterinary Behaviorists. "There may be an indirect affect because of how it makes the owner feel, causing the owner to interact with the cat in different ways. Cats are very good at reading body language." Beaver does concede, however, that tranquil music might help calm cats by filling the void of silence when nobody is home.

Hermann Bubna-Littitz, a professor at the Veterinary Medical University of Vienna, is one of the few veterinarians to explore the relationship between cats and music. In a study with 21 cats, Bubna-Littitz found that when he played music, the cats huddled close to the speakers and displayed less aggressive behavior. Without music during the testing time, the cats' aggressive behavior returned. Bubna-Littitz became so convinced that his mix of soft, electronic and natural sounds helped relieve cats' anxiety that he started Pets and Music, a company that produces music CDs for cats and dogs.

Nicky is one of the cats I've been trying to track down. His link on House Panthers says KellyCat, but it leads nowhere. That would make sense, as they blog off blogger (but couldn't you at least fill out the profile a bit and add a link to the "My Website" section?)

Nicky turned 7-years-old last October. He was adopted as a kitten and has lived with his family since. Upon moving in, he immediately tried to take over the household, but Kelly still refuses to bow down to him.

He is very protective of his family who writes that "People may associate with dogs the words 'loyal,' 'faithful,' and 'brave,' but these qualities also apply to our little black cat. He also plays fetch, he growls when the doorbell rings, and sometimes he even howls in the middle of the night for no apparent reason."

My Bean's mom says that cats are much more loyal, brave and faithful than dogs, but that they always get mislabeled as sneaky, cruel and aloof by people who do not understand us. Perhaps we need to hire better public relations people?

Sometimes called “El Gatito Perfecto”, this good cat blogs at It's all Good. He also does Midnight Monday on a regular basis, even if he never posts links for us.

Time After Time: Essentials for the proper care of an aging cat

(Part 3 of 3)

Oops, an Accident

Cleaning up messes throughout the house can be aggravating for your human staff, but it is not surprising for aging cats to urinate or defecate outside the litterbox. Older cats are more at risk for kidney and/or liver failure, diabetes and even osteoarthritis; all of which contribute to litterbox-related behavior problems. Your caretaker should spend extra time ensuring that your litterbox is clean, and placed in a private area. If the problems continues, pay your veterinarian a visit to put your mind at ease and ensure there are no health issues.

Mega Personality

Personalities might change in old age, but for cats, sometimes the opposite is more accurate.

"What I have noticed is that whatever personality a cat has becomes more exaggerated as they age," says Kelly K. Jones, a veterinarian at the Cat Hospital of Wichita in Wichita, Kansas. "For instance, a lap cat will become more of a lap cat. An aggressive cat, on the other hand, will certainly not become more friendly as he ages, but I have not seen personality changes unless it is associated with something like a brain tumor or other brain condition."

"An informed and alert caretaker is a cat's best friend," says Stephanie F. Westerman, an associate veterinarian at Summer Street Cat Clinic in Buffalo, N.Y. "With an attentive caretaker, regular veterinary care and a dose of luck, cats can live good-quality lives to late in the teens, and even beyond!"

You now know exactly how to keep thriving through the rest of your life. Schedule: an appointment with your veterinarian: assure that cozy spots are set up for you to curl up in, and get ready make the most of your golden years.
